In this workshop Jai Sallay-Carrington will be demonstrating how to build a human torso with an animal head using the slab-building technique. Participants will focus on body proportions, sculpting either clothing or a naked form, and achieving an expressive position for the body. Jai will guide attendees through shaping and assembling a torso, paying special attention to anatomical details that bring life and character to each piece.   The class offers creative freedom in designing either realistic or stylized torsos and Jai will go over the many options for surface treatments available to the participants after the firing. This is the technique Jai uses to build their life-sized figures as well as their small-scale pieces, so they will be going over how to translate this technique to a larger scale.

By the end of the workshop, all participants will have an approximately 8-10" tall animal-headed human torso of bare clay, ready to be dried and bisque fired. A bisque firing is included with this workshop, if the participants wish to do a second firing with glazes, they will have to arrange that on their own.

This 3-day workshop centres on blending multiple faces together to create a creature with a convergence of souls, too many teeth and enough eyes to see where you keep your secrets.

Building an animal bust of your choosing, Jai will lead the participants through creating multiple faces so the features flow together smoothly, enhancing the feeling of movement within the piece. Focusing on features such as the eyes, teeth, and the moment where one characteristic meets the other. The building technique we will be using is to construct the creatures as solid forms on day one, then hollow out and reassemble on the second day. The third day will be for finalizing details and surface decoration, such as painting on underglaze and using the sgraffito technique.

By the end of these three classes, you will have an approximately 8” tall bust with the ideal number of faces, finished and painted with underglaze, ready to be dried and bisque fired. Included in this price is the clay, underglaze and one firing to have your sculpture finished. Tools are provided.

New classes and workshops will be listed in the fall of 2025.
