In this 3-day workshop Jai Sallay-Carrington will be demonstrating how to build a clothed human torso with an animal head using the slab-building technique. Participants will build heir own figures, focusing on body proportions in expressive positions as well as sculpting and painting funky clothing.
Clothing can drastically change the shape of the body as well as suggest movement with how the”fabric” is flowing, even if its’ all clay! what kind of shapes and patterns would you like to see on your human-hybrid sculpture?
Jai will guide attendees through shaping and assembling a torso and head, paying special attention to the anatomy o the body and the animal head of your choosing. The 3rd day of this workshop will be focused on painting underglaze patterns onto the clothing and using the sgraffito technique to add texture and more decorations into the clothing. The class offers creative freedom in designing either any kind of stylized figures and clothing.
This is the building technique Jai uses to build their life-sized figures as well as their small-scale pieces, so they will be going over how to translate this technique to a larger scale.
By the end of the workshop, all participants will have an approximately 10" tall animal-headed human torso painted with underglaze, ready to be dried and bisque fired.
This workshop includes clay, tools, underglaze and 2 firings.
